Abstract
1351742 Manufacturing electrolysis electrodes; coating with precious metals MARSTON EXCELSIOR Ltd 19 April 1971 [25 March 1970] 43899/73 Divided out of 1351741 Heading C7B A method of manufacturing an electrode for use in electrolytic processes comprises applying a paint composition containing a chemical compound of a precious metal to a substrate of Ti, Ta or Nb or an alloy based on one of these metals, the said substrate having a primary layer of oxide thereon, heating said composition to produce a layer containing the precious metal or an oxide thereof, and subsequently electro-plating a precious metal onto said layer. Subsequent to the electro-plating step a further layer of the paint composition may be applied and heated as before. By "precious metal" is meant Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt, Au and Ag. The heating of the paint composition may be carried out in an atmosphere of air or cracked ammonia. The substrate may have a core of Cu or Al. Examples describe the preparation of electrodes having a Ti substrate provided with a layer of TiO 2 , a final electro-plated layer of Pt or Pt-Ir alloy, and an intermediate layer of RuO 2 or a Pt-Ir alloy. The electro-plating may be carried out using a sodium hexahydroxyplatinate bath. The manufactured electrode may be used in metal electro-refining, electro-plating (e.g. with Ni or Cr), organo-electrosynthesis, or production of chlorine.
