Abstract

1351374 Wound closing appliances IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 17 July 1972 [17 Sept 1971 4 Feb 1972] 43438/71 and 5352/72 Heading A5R [Also in Division B4] A wound clip applicator includes two elongated sections 1, 2, two forceps arms 17, 18, and a base 3, the sections and arms being hinged to the base 3 at 19, 20, 30, 31 and the arms, sections and base being formed in an integral moulding from thermoplastic polymeric material (see Fig. III). To assemble the applicator the sections 1, 2 are interlocked by means of projections 4-11 to form a housing and the arms are interlocked with the housing by means of projections 23-26. A plunger consisting of a spring 15 and a seat 14 is placed in the housing to bias a stack of clips 12 towards jaws 27, 28 of the arms 17, 18. The jaws have lips 29 (see Fig. 1). To operate the applicator the arms are moved towards each other, against the resilient bias produced by pivots 21, 22, so that the clip 12 between the jaws is bent across the wound, and remains in position on the wound when the pressure on the arms is released. The next clip 12 is then ready for use. The moulding of base, sections 1, 2 and arms 17, 18 is made from for example polyethylene, polypropylene, or copolymers thereof, polyamides such as nylon, polyesters such as polyethylene terephthalate, polycarbonate, or polyacetal, and is formed by a oneshot injection process. An alternative seat (36), see Fig. IV (not shown), has flanges (37).
