Abstract

1351357 Toy helicopters &c U C SEEFLUTH 11 May 1971 [12 May 1970] 14326/71 Heading A6S A flying toy simulating a helicopter or gyroplane is fixed to a mooring string and kept hovering by a rotor having a continuous lift surface 2 mounted on the fuselage 1, upon which is also mounted on a tail unit which stabilises the toy aerodynamically with regard the direction of pull of the string. The rotor consists of a thin plastics foil of polygonal shape which is stretched over spars 6 on whose ends are mounted small tilted members 4 which cause rotation of the foil in an air current. The foil has a central aperture (it is stated that this improves flow conditions) and is transparent apart from a pattern 7 representing rotating helicopter blades. The rotor may alternatively be shaped like a triangle with truncated apices, when slightly tilted cross struts 11, Fig. 2 (not shown) replace the members 4, or it may be circular in shape. The tail unit comprises a V-shaped horizontal stabiliser together with a vertical stabiliser; alternatively the V may be inverted and/or the vertical stabiliser may be omitted (Figs. 3a-3c, not shown), but in any case the unit may be laterally and vertically adjustable. The mooring string 22, Fig. 5a is attached to a lever 25 which can be rotatably adjusted to compensate for manufacturing tolerances, which would otherwise lead to instability. To suppress pitching motions in gusty wind, the string may also be connected to the front part of the fuselage by a branch piece 23, Fig. 5 (not shown).
