Abstract

1350703 Recovery of Hg and/or Ag values from effluents E B BURDON ENGS Ltd 30 June 1971 [6 May 1971] 30723/71 Headings C1A and C1C [Also in Division C7] Hg and/or Ag values are recovered from an aqueous industrial effluent by treating the effluent with a reducing agent capable of converting the metal value from the ionic or complex ionic form in which it is present in the effluent to an insoluble form and adding an organic flocculating agent, so that the insoluble form of the metal is precipitated with the organic flocculating agent, the precipitate being then separated from the attendant mother liquor. Inorganic nucleating agents may be added, e.g. ferrous or aluminium sulphates or calcium or barium salts, to aid precipitation. The reducing agent may be Na 2 S 2 O 4 or hydrazine. Silver in a photographic effluent containing AgNO 3 is first treated with Na 2 S 2 O 4 and Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 containing HCl and then with NaOH to a pH of 8À5 and a flocculating agent added. Mercury effluent may be treated in two stages (i) firstly by adding NaOH to bring the pH to 10-11, then adding HCl to a pH of 4-5 and finally adding a polyacrylamide flocculating agent whereby the Hg 2 Cl 2 is precipitated, (ii) by adding to the resulting filtrate first Na 2 S 2 O 4 then Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 and polyacrylamide and finally adjusting the pH to 3-5 before separating the precipitate by filtration.
