Abstract

1350499 Continuous steel making CONSILIUL NATIONAL PENTRU STIINTA S I TEHNOLOGIE 4 Oct 1971 [8 Oct 1970] 46039/71 Heading C7D Molten iron is desulphurized in a mixer, or in a trough leading thereto, and is then atomized with air at a pressure of 2 to 8 atmospheres to remove manganese, silicon, phosphorus and residual sulphur,together with partial elimination of carbon, the operation being carried out at 1320 -1450‹C. In a further vessel the metal is then decarburized to 0À2 - 0À8 % carbon at 1520 - 1670‹ C by oxygen blast and dilution with material such as scrap, sponge iron, iron oxide or pre-reduced oxide pellets, after which it is separated from slag, finally deoxidized, and alloyed if necessary. If desired vacuum treatment may precede final deoxidation. As particularly described, iron is fed to mixer 1 where reagents such as lime, sodium carbonate, calcium carbide or aluminium are introduced in a stream of nitrogen or methane. Iron leaving the mixer is atomized by air jets 10a, 10b, with fluxes being added at 11a, lib, the resultant slag flowing off through extended trough 17 while iron flows to decarburizing chamber 16 where it is oxygen blown by lances 20. The resultant emulsion flows into separating chamber 23, from where slag is returned to the atomizing chamber 12, while iron passes through the vacuum degassing vessel 32 (shown inverted for clarity), into the final deoxidation and alloying chamber 34. The decarburizing vessel 16 preferably has a capacity at least fifteen times the output per minute.
