Abstract
1350068 Exercise monitoring device; selective signalling J S S STEWART 22 June 1971 [23 June 1970] 30343/70 Headings G4H and G5G A physiotherapy control device includes a stepping register 31, at least one input terminal to which sensors 7 may be connected, a comparator 44 or 45 for each input terminal for providing an output signal when the signal from the respective sensor exceeds a predetermined level, means enabled when said register is in a first particular state ( or 2) to apply said output signal to an input of a counter means 40 for stepping said register into a further state (2 or 3) when the count registered by said counter reaches a predetermined value (as stored at 48 or 49), a timer 41 enabled when said register 31 is in a second particular state (3) for stepping said register into another of its states (1) when a predetermined time measured by said timer (and selected at 9) has elapsed and indicating means (2-4) for indicating the state of said register 31. The invention is described for monitoring and instructing patients engaged in performing for example calf exercises and deep breathing, the sensors 7 in this case having a pedal ergometer and a hand held spirometer respectively. In operation, potentiometers 14 and 15 are adjusted to provide desired reference voltages to the comparators 44 and 45 and switches 9, 16, 17 and 10 are adjusted to select desired prestored values for time intervals and counter operating values. With the register 31 in state 1, instructions are given by displays 2 and 3 being illuminated and AND-gates 33, 46 are opened for counting the preset number of signals from sensor S1. When the counter 40 reaches the number stored at 48, register 31 is stepped on to state 2 for a similar procedure to occur in respect of deep breathing sensor S2. Stepping of register 31 to state 3 causes timer 41 to operate, after the preselected delay, to return the register to its initial state for the above cycle to start again. After a preselected number of cycles counted by counter 50 the machine is switched off. A timer 39 is provided for causing a warning light 19 to be illuminated if a sensor signal is not received within a predetermined time interval when the register 31 is in states 1 or 2. The displays 2-4 may be replaced by tape-recorded instructions. The number of sensors and register stages may vary from one upwards.
