Abstract
1349764 Vinylidene fluoride polymers PENNWALT CORP 20 Aug 1971 [25 Aug 1970] 39241/71 Heading C3P Vinylidene fluoride with up to 50% of one or more of tetrafluoroethylene, chlorotrifluoroethylene, trifluoroethylene, vinyl fluoride, hexafluoropropene, pentafluoropropene and ethylene, is copolymerized in aqueous medium containing a free radical polymerization catalyst and at least 0À2% of a suspending agent which is a reaction product of 1 mole of a polyalkylene oxide having an average molecular weight of 1000 to 10,000 and 2 or 3 carbon atoms in each alkylene group with 0À2 to 20 moles of an organic diepoxy group having two oxirane epoxy groups with their oxygen atoms attached to adjacent carbon atoms of an aliphatic or alicyclic chain and any other oxygen atoms being in ether or ester group; the epoxy groups being either terminal groups of an aliphatic chain or joined to adjacent carbon atoms of an alicyclic ring. In examples vinylidene fluoride is copolymerized with tetrafluoroethylene using diisopropyl peroxydicarbonate as initiator and the reaction product of polyoxyethylene glycol and butadiene diepoxide optionally in the presence of octafluorocyclobutane. Comparative examples using other suspending agents are also described.
