Abstract

1349506 Jointing by forging; punching GENERAL MOTORS CORP 8 June 1972 [17 June 1971] 26777/72 Headings B3H and B3W [Also in Division F2] A panel 11 is connected to a nut blank comprising a body 10b (Fig. 8) provided with a stepped-bore 24b, 25b and an annular lip 29 by mounting the panel 11 on the end surface of the nut blank provided with the annular lip 29, punching a hole in the panel coaxial with the stepped-bore 24b, 25b and deforming the area around the hole in the panel so as to extrude a portion of the panel into the larger diameter bore portion 25b and under the lip 29. The larger diameter bore portion 25b may be provided with ribs to assist in securing the panel to the nut blank 10b. A tool 40a (Fig. 6) for punching and deforming the panel may comprise a piercing tip 41, an extrusion punch portion 42 and a punch nose 43, the tool being used in conjunction with an anvil 35 for supporting the nut blank 10b.
