1348943 5,6,6 - Trihalosteroids E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 22 April 1971 [22 April 1970 11 Jan 1971] 22884/73 Divided out of 1348941 Heading C2U The invention comprises compounds of formula wherein X is F or Cl; Y is H or Br; Z is oxo, #-hydroxy or #-(C 1-4 alkanoyloxy); R<SP>2</SP> is H or C 1-4 alkanoyl; and R<SP>3</SP> is H or Me; with the proviso that when Z is oxo, then Y is Br. Compounds I (Z = OH or alkanoyloxy; Y = H) are prepared by fluorination of the corresponding 6-ones, and may be converted to other compounds I by 21-bromination and 3-oxidation. Also any 3-ester group may be hydrolysed to hydroxy. Compounds I may be further converted as described in Specifications 1,348,942 and 1,348,941. 3#,17α - Diacetoxy - 5α - fluoro - 16α - methylpregnane - 6,20 - dione (III) is prepared from 3#,17α - dihydroxy - 16α - methylpregn - 5 - en- 20-one (II) by the sequence: II # II 3- acetate # II diacetate # 3#,17α-diacetoxy- 5α - fluoro - 6 - nitrimino - 16α - methylpregnan- 20-one # III. 3#,17α - Diacetoxy - 5α - chloropregnane - 6,20- dione is prepared from 17α-hydroxypregnenolone diacetate via 3#,17α - diacetoxy - 5α- chloro - 6# - hydroxypregnan - 20 - one. Pharmaceutical compositions for oral, parenteral and topical administration, comprise a carrier and a compound of Formula I (the activity of which is not disclosed).
