Abstract

1348799 Acrylic fibres DOW BADISCHE CO 27 July 1971 35123/71 Heading B5B Fibres of hollow or non-circular cross-section are prepared by wet spinning from a circular orifice an acrylic polymer, containing at least 80% acrylonitrile, from an organic solvent and/ or aqueous inorganic salt solution into a first coagulation bath containing the same solvent and/or salt and from 35-95% coagulant (e.g. water) and maintained at - 25‹ to + 25‹ C. for an average dwell time of 1-40 sec., passing the partially coagulated fibres into a second coagulation bath at 30-120‹ C. for an average dwell time of 1-75 sec., the second bath optionally containing the same solvent and/or salt and at least 59% coagulant, and finally washing, stretching and drying the fibres. The fibres may be stretched during coagulation in the first bath. Subsequent stretching may be conducted using up to 3 stages at room temperature and/or in hot air and/or in water at 0‹ C. or 100‹ C. The non-circular fibres have a shape-index of 1À25 to 1À65. Exemplified solvents are dimethyl acetamide, dimethyl formamide and dimethyl sulphoxide. Zinc chloride or sodium thiocyanate may be the salt. For controlling the final fibre structure the following treatments are used: cooling the fibres to 0‹ C. before drying; impregnating the fibres with, e.g. acetone, before drying; drying the fibres before a stretching step. Polyacrylonitrile and a copolymer thereof with methyl acrylate and optionally methyl methacrylate are exemplified.
