Abstract
1348368 Lathes; bar-stock feeding NORMAN LEVY ASSOCIATES OVERSEAS Inc 19 April 1971 [4 Dec 1969] 59211/69 Headings B3B and B3T Apparatus for machining, e.g. chamfering, the ends of bar stock comprises means for supporting a plurality of pieces of bar stock, means for feeding the bar stock transversely of its axis to a position from which the leading piece of bar stock is transferred to gripping means, and a rotary machine head arranged to move axially to adjust the bar into a predetermined position in the gripping means and then to rotate to machine the end of the piece of bar stock held in the gripping means. The bar stock 15 is supported on rails 14 and walking beam members 11 feed it transversely (and to a limited extent axially) till the leading piece engages stop members 28 (30) which form a retractable gate for the bar stock, and simultaneously operates an air switch 39. Operation of this switch initiates movement of jaws 22, 23 controlled by piston and cylinder unit 26 and also relieves the stop members 28 (30) of downward pressure exerted by cylinder and piston units 31; a pivotally arranged member 38 attached to the movable jaw 23 serves during the movement of the jaws to transfer the leading piece of bar stock into the jaws the stop members 28 (30) being pushed up out of the way during this movement by the action of the member 38 on cam surfaces 35, 36 attached to the stop 28. The piece of bar stock is initially held loosely by the jaws 22, 23 so as to be moved axially into a predetermined position upon advance of the machining head 19 and then gripped tightly while the end is chamfered. Upon separation of the jaws 22, 23 the bar stock is ejected by a spring loaded plunger 41 and stops 42 into a discharge shoot 43. Axial movement of the machining head 19 is effected by fluid pressure means and limited by a control 40.
