Abstract

1347883 Container closures J DUKESS 28 July 1971 35339/71 Heading B8T A closure for a container comprises a cap 16 internally screw-threaded at 20 and having a groove 24, formed in side walls 18 between the thread and top 22, and a packing disc 26 received in the groove, the disc being formed in three layers: a resilient layer 32 sandwiched between and bonded to two thinner stressresistant, work-resistant, impervious layers 28, 30. The disc is normally free to rotate within the groove, but when the closure is applied to a container, it is compressed between the top 22 and the neck 15 of the container and the centre layer is forced beyond the other two layers in a tongue 36 which forms a seal against the inner wall of the groove 24. The outer layers are preferably formed from a low density polyethylene about <SP>1</SP>/ 1000 inch thick with the centre layer about 12-30 times thicker and formed from a thermoplastic rubber-like material.
