Abstract
1347033 Antilock braking systems D BLIESENER 4 May 1971 [4 May 1970 22 Feb 1971] 12947/71 Heading F2F In an antilock brake system voltage signals U B , U M respectively representative of rate of change of pressure in the wheel's brake cylinder and rate of change of frictional force between the wheel and a road surface control operation of a solenoid valve between a pressure source and wheel cylinder to prevent wheel-lock. A circuit is closed on commencement of the braking by a switch 2 and voltages U B and U M are respectively fed to the primary coils of transformers 4, 6 and 5, 7 to induce a voltage corresponding to the rate of change of U B and U M in the secondary coils. Transformers 4, 5, 6, 7 are connected in series to amplifiers 8, 9, 10, 11 of which 8, 9 amplify voltages induced with voltages U B and U M rising, 10 amplifies the induced voltage when U B declines and 11 amplifies every voltage induced by U M . If the wheel cylinder pressure rises while the frictional force declines or remains constant, or if the wheel cylinder pressure remains constant while the frictional force drops the circuit to coil 3 of a solenoid valve is closed through the amplified induction voltages and switches 12, 13, 14, 15. Coil 3 causes a chamber 9<SP>1</SP> of a modulating device to be connected to the engine intake manifold causing movement of a diaphragm 10<SP>1</SP> and piston 11<SP>1</SP> to open a one way valve 14<SP>1</SP> and cause pressure to act on a differential piston 1<SP>1</SP> to close communication between the pressure source and wheel cylinder through passages 2<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP>, and close a non-return valve. After the termination of lock piston 11<SP>1</SP> is released and fluid in the wheel cylinder passes to the pressure source through one way valve 8<SP>1</SP>. The wheel cylinder pressure and friction force are measured piezo-electrically or by extensometer strips. The fluid may be liquid or compressed air. The friction force may be measured directly or may be determined indirectional from the horizontal reaction force between the wheel and road or the horizontal reaction force acting on the wheel bearing or the horizontal bending moment on the wheel suspension.
