Abstract
1346919 Ships hulls SWAN HUNTER GROUP Ltd and R RUTHERFORD 10 Oct 1972 [21 Oct 1971] 48990/71 Heading B7S The bow or stern of a ship is constructed from a set of prefabricated units including side units B in each of which webs 18 are normal to the outer shell 16 and run between the shell and a parallel bulkhead 12. In the illustrated bow, a hollow bottom unit A is prefabricated upside down and is then righted to serve as a platform on which the side units B and a stem unit C are secured, after which an upper deck unit D is secured in place. The bulkheads 12, tank top 6 and web 24 may be non-watertight so that the entire fore-peak tank can be used for water ballast. Alternatively, all the boundaries of the centre tank 34 may be water tight so that it can be used as a clean ballast tank, the space outside it remaining dry. The ship may be a tanker, bulk carrier or other cargo ship.
