Abstract

1346344 Coated article ILFORD Ltd 21 June 1972 [23 June 1971] 29493/71 Heading B2E [Also in Division C4] An X-ray intensifying screen is produced by coating on to a dimensionally stable base a dispersion of a fluorescent metal salt in a low-boiling point organic coating solvent or solvent solution of a polymeric binder together with a high boiling solvent selected from those which have an evaporation rate on the ether scale above 35 but below 200, allowing or causing the coating solvent or solvents to evaporate, then coating on to the fluorescent layer while this layer is still moist and before the high-boiling solvent has evaporated a transparent film-forming polymeric material dissolved in a solvent and then drying the resulting screen. Preferably the transparent film-forming polymeric material is applied by spraying. Suitable fluorescent salts are calcium tungstate, zinc sulphide, barium sulphate, lead sulphate. Suitable polymeric binders are cellulose nitrate, cellulose triacetate, cellulose acetate/butyrate, polyvinyl butyral. Suitable polymers for the protective layer are cellulose acetate, cellulose nitrate or polymethyl methacrylate. The coating solvent may be acetone, or a mixture of acetone and ethyl acetate. Preferably the base is a polyester and a lightreflective layer comprising light-reflective particles in a polymeric binder may be first cast on to the base before the fluorescent layer is cast thereon. If the base support is transparent the fluorescent layer may be coated on to the other side of the support to the light-reflecting layer. The preferred high boiling point solvent is ethyl lactate. Preferably the weight of fluorescent salt compared with the binder is 40/1-25/1. In an Example a polyester base web coated with a subbing layer is coated with a reflective coating comprising titanium dioxide dispersed in polyvinyl acetate dissolved in an acetone/alcohol mixture, the coating dried and the composition comprising calcium tungstate, cellulose nitrate, acetone, ethyl acetate, ethyl lactate, dibutyl phthalate (plasticizer) then applied. While the resulting fluorescent layer is still moist there is sprayed thereon a composition comprising cellulose acetate, acetone, alcohol, toluene, methyl cellosolve (Trade Mark) acetate, methyl phthallyl ethyl glycollate (plasticizer). The coated web was then dried.
