1346174 Electro-machining gearwheels T I (GROUP SERVICES) Ltd 13 Aug 1971 [15 May 1970] 23553/70 Heading C7B The machining of a gearwheel is finished electro-chemically by rotating it at constant speed as an anode in mesh with a cathodic tool gearwheel, preferably of the same dimensions, which has flanks of its teeth each provided with a layer of dispersed particulate non-conducting material, e.g. an abrasive diamond or alumina deposit, varying in thickness so that the spacing of the flanks of the teeth of both gearwheels at their point of driving engagement decreases as its speed increases along the flanks, whilst an electrolyte stream is supplied between the meshing teeth. Either only one set or both sets of flanks are provided with the layer of material. In the latter case the thickness of the layers may vary in the same predetermined manner or in the opposite sense from root to tip of the flanks. The variation in thickness may be obtained by providing a uniformly thick deposit of material embedded in metal matrix along the edges of the tool gearwheel teeth, rotating it at constant speed in driving mesh with a similar cathodic master gearwheel whilst supplying an electrolyte stream between the meshing teeth to electrochemically remove matrix metal along the teeth edges to expose the deposit.
