Abstract
1346066 Centrifugal pumps; turbinesbalancing end thrust JS SWEARINGEN 27 Dec 1970 [7 Jan 1970] 42280/73 Divided out of 1346065 Headings F1C and FIT [Also in Divisions G1 G3 F2] A rotary machine such as a centrifugal pump or compressor, a turbine or a turboexpander comprises a thrust bearing which measures the axial thrust on the machine shaft, the measurement being used to control the axial thrust on the shaft automatically or manually. In Fig. 1, a single stage centrifugal compressor comprises a rotor 31 mounted on a shaft 11 which is mounted in bearings 12, 13. Bearings 12, 13 each include a journal bearing 12a, 13a and a thrust bearing 14, 15. Oil is pumped to the chambers 24, 25 of the thrust bearings via restrictors 22, 23, and the differential pressure between the two chambers 24. 25 is measured at 30. This measurement is used to control the thrust on shaft 11 by adjusting a valve 43 in a conduit 42 and thus adjusting the pressure produced in chamber 40 by the leakage of air past seal 39. In alternative embodiments, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown) shaft 11 may be provided with only a single thrust bearing, the pressure or pressure gradient in which is used to control valve 43. The control of valve 43 may be effected manually, or automatically by means of a pneumatic, hydraulic or electrical servo system.
