1344740 Boots &c BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 28 April 1971 [30 April 1970] 11775/71 Heading A3B A pulling over and toe lasting machine includes a control lever 12 which moves as a consequence of the pulling movement of one of the grippers, the movement of the lever 12 and hence the gripper being limited by an adjustable stop 26, and means whereby an operator can disengage the control lever 12 from the stop and move the lever 12 further to allow the gripper to impart a greater tensioning movement to the upper. The machine includes a gripper controlled by a control lever 12 at each side of the shoe to allow the operator to correct the position of an upper on a last. As described a gripper 1, 2, 3 is carried by a piston rod 4 connected to a piston 6 in a cylinder 5, the gripper 1, 2, 3 being moved downwardly to tension the upper by supplying air under pressure through port 8 to the space above the piston 6. The space 13 below the piston 6 is filled with hydraulic fluid and is connected by line 57 to a cylinder 14 which contains a plunger 15. Thus downward movement of the piston 6 causes the plunger 15 to move to the left (as shown). The plunger 15 carries a cylinder 21 containing a piston 19 which is held against a bush 24 by air under high pressure supplied through port 23. The control lever 12 is pivoted at 32 to one arm 51 of a two armed lever 51, 17 which is pivoted to a shaft 18. The lever 17 has an abutment 52 in contact with piston rod 16. Thus movement of the piston 6 and hence the plunger 15 causes the lever to pivot about shaft 18 until it reaches a position 27 where it engages a stop 26. The stop 26 is adjustably mounted in a slot 29 in a bracket 28. If the operator is not satisfied with the position of the upper he can move the lever 12 transversely about pivot 32 to clear the stop 26 so that he can move the lever 12 further, e.g. to position 33, to allow further movement of the gripper. When the: pulling over is completed and the grippers have released the upper the cylinder 21 is connected to exhaust to allow the piston 19 to-move so thatthe grippers can be rapidly lowered out of the way of the wipers even though the lever 12 abuts the stop 26.
