Abstract

1343913 Re-activation of de-activated hydrocarbon hydroconversion catalysts CHEVRON RESEARCH CO 19 April 1971 [30 Jan 1970 4 Feb 1970 20 Feb 1970 15 April 1970 11 Jan 1971] 24255/71 Heading B1E Deactivated catalyst comprising a Group VIII noble metal component, a tin component, a halogen component and porous alumina carrier material is reactivated, after regeneration to remove coke deposits therefrom, by contact, at a temperature of from 500 to 1300‹F, with an activating gas comprising oxygen and a halogenating component. The Group VIII noble metal may be selected from ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, irridium and platinum, for example iridium in combination with platinium. The catalyst additionally may comprise a rhenium component. The halogen of the catalyst halogen component may be fluorine or chlorine. The alumina, which may be gamma-alumina or eta-alumina, preferably has a surface area greater than 50 m<SP>2</SP>/g. The catalyst may have been regenerated by contact with an oxygen-containing gas containing less than 2 weight per cent oxygen. The activating gas preferably is moist and preferably contains at least 0.1 weight per cent oxygen. A preferred activating gas is a mixture comprising air and a halogenating component and containing up to 99.8 weight per cent inert gas, for example nitrogen. Exemplified halogenating components are fluorine, chlorine, hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen chloride, trifluorochloromethane, difluorodichloromethane, chloroform, carbontetrachloride, ethyl chloride, iso-butyl fluoride, t-butyl fluoride, t-butyl chloride and trichloroethylene. After reactivation, the catalyst may be contacted, at a temperature of from 600 to 1300‹F, with hydrogencontaining gas which preferably is substantially free of hydrocarbons, carbon oxides and water. As exemplified, catalyst comprising platinum, tin, chlorine and alumina is reactivated at 950‹F using a gas comprising chloroform and 1 weight per cent oxygen in nitrogen. Reference is made to Specifications 1,319,265 and 1,343,912.
