Abstract

1343872 Emulsion burners ELF UNION 30 May 1972 [1 June 1971] 25299/72 Heading F4T An emulsion burner comprises a central body 1 having a passage 23 Fig. 2 for receiving a combustible liquid from a tube 3, a passage 26 for receiving a first sludge or liquid charged with fine particles from a tube 4, and a passage 28 receiving fluid from a duct 2 for atomizing the first sludge, these three fluids being mixed within a chamber 24 to form an emulsion which emerges from an orifice 30 in a cover 25, a conepointed member 31 being located adjacent orifice 30, and said body 1 having a passage 34 for receiving a second sludge or liquid, containing larger particles than the first sludge, from a tube 5 and passing it into an annular region 35 for atomization therein by a fluid supplied thereto from an annular chamber 11 via a passage 37, the atomized second sludge being expelled from region 35 in a ring-shaped pattern surrounding and stabilizing the flame produced by the emulsion discharged from orifice 30. Oxidizing or carurizing gas is supplied to a casing 15 having an outlet 19, Fig. 1. Swivler vanes 27, 29, 33a, 36 and 38 aid the mixing and atomization. The atomizing fluids may be air or steam. Air may be supplied to each of casing 15 and passages 37 and 28 in the proportions of 80%, 15% and 5% respectively of the total air supplied. In a modified burner, combustible liquid from a tube (3a), Fig. 3 (not shown), is mixed with another liquid to be destroyed, such as gasoline or acetone, supplied from a pipe (3b) in a chamber (3c) upstream of the emulsion mixing chamber 24, the fuel supply to tube (3a) being turned off if desired. The combustible liquid may be a hydrocarbon and the sludges may be derived from bottom sediments of storage tanks or refining wastes, such as hydrocarbon sludges.
