Abstract

1343870 Fluorocarbon emulsion GREEN CROSS CORP and TANABE SEIYAKU CO Ltd 11 May 1972 [19 May 1971] 22035/72 Heading B1V [Also in Division A5] An emulsion for use as artificial blood comprises from 5 to 60% w/v of a fluorocarbon (defined) in the form of particles diameter less than 0.2 micron, 0.2 to 5% w/v one or more non-ionic surfactants and 2 to 20% w/v of one or more polyalcohols. The fluorocarbon used has S.G. 1.5 to 2.0 and is substantially insoluble in water. The emulsion may be made by dissolving the surfactant, for example polyoxyethylene-hydrogenated cator oil or a polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene type surfactant together with an injectable polyalcohol such as xylitol, sorbitol or glycerol in water with heating, adding the pre-heated fluorocarbon with vigorous stirring, optionally diluting with water and adjusting the pH to 7.4 then emulsifying using a high pressure emulsifier. The emulsion so prepared may be sealed into vials and sterilized. The surfactant may be purified before use by a dialysis or using ion-exchange resins.
