Abstract

1343401 Dispersing oil slicks IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 13 July 1973 184/70 Heading C1C [Also in Divisions B1 C2 and C3] Oil slicks on water are emulsified and dispersed by adding as an emulsifying agent, an oil-soluble, substantially water-insuluble compound of formula wherein RCO represents an acylic radical of an unsaturated or branched chain fatty acid of 10 to 22 C atoms, R 1 represents an alkyl or alkenyl radical (10-22C), n is integer 2 to 4 and m is integer from 2 to 30. The polyoxyalkylene chain is in the form of a random or block copolymer, and the unsaturared radical R may be derived from oleic, linoleic, linolenic acids and commercial mixtures thereof, e.g. soya bean, linseed and tall oil fatty acids which may contain minor proportions of saturated and/or rosin acids. Branched chain radicals may be from synthetic acids derived from petroleum stocks and paraffin waxes. Alkyl or alkenyl R 1 radicals may be dodecyl, cetyl, octadecyl, oleyl and C 12- C 18 alcohols from the carbonylation of olefines or oxidation of paraffin hydrocarbons. The agents may be applied as solid adsorbates on pumice, powdered chalk or as complexes with urea or as solutions in isopropanol, kerosene, solvent naphtha or mixtures thereof. The solution may be applied as a fine spray.
