Abstract
1343044 Mercapto carboxylic acids CIBAGEIGY AG 19 April 1971 [6 Feb 1970] 21138/71 Heading C2C A mercapto carboxylic acid is extracted from its aqueous solution in the form of an ester by extracting the aqueous solution with a medium comprising a non-esterifying polar organic solvent for the mercapto carboxylic acid and a primary or secondary alcohol for the esterification thereof, the alcohol being present in stoichiometric proportion or up to 20% excess over stoichiometric proportion relative to the mercapto carboxylic acid and subjecting the organic phase obtained by such extraction to distillation to separate unreacted non esterifying polar organic solvent and alcohol and water formed by esterification of the acid by the alcohol. In an example an aqueous solution of thioglycolic acid is extracted with a mixture of 2-ethyl hexanol and tetrahydrofuran.
