Abstract
1342644 Making dies; rolling; screws NATIONAL LEAD CO 19 April 1971 [30 Jan 1970] 20654/71 Headings B3A B3M and B3N A thread rolling die, for forming a thread on a screw having a cylindrical shank portion and a tapered end portion, is assembled from two sections 22 and 24, Fig. 3. The two sections serve to roll threads on the respective shank and end portions of the screw. The sections are initially milled to provide thread forming grooves in their surfaces, are secured together, hardened, and then ground on their sides and bottoms. If it is desired to roll a lobular thread on a screw (Fig. 8 in cross-section), the milled sections of the die are impressed with a tool before assembly. The inclination of the impressions formed by the tool determine the axial or helical relations of the lobes on the screw relative to the screw axis.
