Abstract

1342507 Fuzes GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 11 May 1971 [11 May 1970] 14146/71 Heading F3A A projectile fuze which can be remotely set to function either as a proximity and selfdestruction fuze or as an electronic time fuze, and is also resistant to electronic counter measures, comprises an antenna 12 for receiving command pulses from a remote source, a local oscillator 50 which commences when the projectile carrying the fuze is fired, and a counter 10 for counting the pulses from the remote source and local oscillator. When the fuze is to function as a proximity and self-destruction fuze, the counter is filled to the point T 1 and, after a pause determined by delay 66, an inhibit latch 72 is de-activated and an oscillator 76 supplies pulses to a proximity transmitting antenna 80. Meanwhile pulses from the local oscillator 50 activate a latch 62 so as to prevent the fuze from receiving pulses from electronic jamming devices. Loading of the oscillator 76 by the proximity of a target is detected by a monitor 86 which supplies a signal to a circuit 44 for firing a detonator. However, if a target is not detected within one second, the counter, which has now been advanced to the point T 2 by the local oscillator, triggers a multi-vibrator 92 and this causes the latch 72 to block the oscillator 76. Self-destruction occurs some time later when the counter has been advanced to the point T 3 by the local oscillator. When the fuze is to function as an electronic time fuze, the command pulses are fed to the counter at such a rate that the signal from the point T 2 is received by the latch 72 before the signal from the point T 1 passes through the delay 66. The oscillator 76 therefore never becomes operative and the fuze is detonated when the counter is filled up to the point T 3 by the local oscillator 50. The power for the fuze is supplied from a thermal battery or a piezo-electric device.
