Abstract

Nitric acid.-In the synthetic production of nitric acid by the action of electric discharges on a mixture of air and water vapour, the output of nitric acid is increased by preliminarily ozonizing the air when dry; or by supersaturating the air with water vapour, some of the water appearing in the form of very small drops; or by arranging that the moistened air is brought to a temperature of 50‹ C. before entering the reaction apparatus; or by rapidly circulating the gases through the reaction apparatus; or by a combination of these methods. Similar apparatus may be used for ozonizing the air and for effecting the synthesis of nitric acid.
