Abstract

1342132 Automatic position control GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 30 April 1971 [3 Aug 1970] 12343/71 Heading G3R An operating head is traversed over the surface of a workpiece to work it or test it, there being one control system maintaining the head axis at a given angle and another maintaining a constant distance between the head and the workpiece. In Fig. 1, an ultrasonic inspection head 50, including a transducer 74 and a water transmission path, is reciprocated longitudinally between limits over the surface of an axial flow compressor blade W by a motor 34 rotating a leadscrew 32 and moved transversely step by step by a motor 20 periodically rotating a leadscrew 18. The transducer output is displayed by a CRT 94 and recorded on electro-sensitive paper P so that the position of any flaws is detected. Four rods (84) Figs. 5, 6 (not shown) spaced around and carried on head 50 make contact with the blade surface and are free to move vertically so that any differences between the positions of the ends of an opposite pair, as detected by eddy-current transducers, causes operation of a motor 66 or 68 whereby the attitude of the head relative to the blade surface is adjusted in one or other of two perpendicular planes until the difference is eliminated with the head normal to the surface. A motor 64 controlled by the position of one of the rods adjusts the vertical position of the blade to maintain a predetermined spacing between the head and the blade during scanning.
