Abstract
1342170 Joining wood end to end CENTRALNE BIURO KONSTRUKCYJNE PRZEMYSLU MASZYNOWEGO LESNICTWA 19 April 1971 [16 April 1970] 26730/71 Heading B5L A machine for joining end to end a series of wooden slats 28 whose ends are shaped to interfit with one another and the end surfaces of which are covered with layers of glue, comprises feeding and braking sections 2, 3 each composed of a lower conveyer, 4 or 5, and an upper conveyer, 6 or 7, between which slats are fed in succession, each two successive slats being urged together end-to-end when one of the slats is in each of the sections. An hydraulic unit is installed in each conveyer and is utilizable as an engine to drive it, the units of the braking section normally acting to drive the conveyers 5, 7 of that section more slowly than those of the feeding section. When, however, the trailing end of a slat in the braking section is engaged by the leading end of a slat in the feeding section, to form a joint, the force transmitted from the conveyers 4, 6 of the feeding section to those 5, 7 of the braking section via the slats causes the conveyers 5, 7 to drive the hydraulic units of that section so that they act as pumps. As described, the hydraulic units are included in drums 13 which drive chains 15 of the conveyers 4-7. The hydraulic units of each of the sections 2, 3 are arranged in parallel, and the pairs of units of the sections are arranged in series. The hydraulic circuit also includes servomotors 17 which are arranged to move frames 8 carrying the conveyers 6, 7 towards or away from the conveyers 4, 5. In operation, a slat 28 introduced into the apparatus operates a switch 26 which causes a pump to feed fluid to the hydraulic units. An auxiliary pump is also actuated to feed additional fluid to the units of the feeding section 2 so that the conveyers 4, 6 move more quickly than the conveyers 5, 7. Hence when the first slat 28 reaches the braking section 3 and a second slat is introduced which is urged longitudinally against the first slat, the clamping pressure between the slats causes the first slat to drive the chains 15 of the section 3. The units of this section now act to pump fluid to the servomotors 17 thus causing the conveyers to be urged together to exert a greater gripping force on the slats. In a second embodiment the auxiliary pump is omitted and the different speeds are produced by using units of different volumetric capacities. The units may drive the drums 13 via gearing. Cleaners 27 are provided for the chains 15.
