Abstract

1341891 Sports surface BAYER AG 19 April 1971 [26 March 1970 8 Aug 1970] 25091/71 Heading A6D [Also in Division B5] A sports surface for use in open air sports stadia comprises (a) an upper tread layer 1 at least 8 mm. thick in the form of a non- woven fabrics of from 90 to 100% by weight of synthetic fibres, having a denier of from 67 to 400 dtex, a cut length of from 50 to 150 mm, and a crimp count of from 2 to 6 arcs per centimetre, the non-woven fabric having a stitch density of from 500 to 15,000 stitches 3 per dn<SP>2</SP>, and 0 to 10% by weight of melt adhesive fibres, said non-woven fabric being additionally consolidated by a rubber and/or plastics binder with a binder content of from 25 to 50% by weight based on the weight of the upper tread layer, (b) a bottom layer 5 consisting of an elastic waterproof rubber or plastics material at least 2 centimetres thick and (c) a water-insoluble adhesive layer 7 bonding together the tread layer 1 and the bottom layer 5. The surface 4 of the upper tread layer may be roughened. The synthetic fibres are suitably of polycaprolactam and may have a circular or, elongated, star-shaped or eliptical cross-section. The fibres are preferably spin-dyed with a green pigment, e.g. chlorophthalocyamine. The layers are preferably bonded by a polyisocyanate based adhesive suitably applied in a spot, linear or random pattern. The binder for consolidating the upper tread layer may be a natural or synthetic rubber, e.g. polychloroprene and may contain an anti-aging compound. The melt-adhesive fibres where these are employed may be polyamide, polyvinyl alcohol or polyethylene. The base layer 5 suitably comprises old rubber cuttings 6 bonded together with an adhesive.
