Abstract
1341090 Plastic films with porous surfaces FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 23 Dec 1971 [28 Dec 1970] 60078/71 Headings C3C and C3R [Also in Division B5] Whitened films with cellular surfaces are prepared by treating a plastics film with a solvent or a swelling agent for the plastic and then treating the film with a material which is miscible with the solvent or swelling agent yet has no power to dissolve or to swell it, dissolved in one or both of the solvent or swelling agent and the non-solvent is a water-insoluble optical brightening agent having the general formula where each of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 is, independently of the others, hydrogen or an alkyl group containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms. Suitable solvents and swelling agents are disclosed for films made of polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, polyacrylonitrile, polymethylmethacrylate, polyethylene, nylon, polyurethane, polycarbonate rubber hydrochloride, cellulose acetates, nitrocellulose and certain copolymers of these. Additionally a white pigment, such as titanium dioxide, may be present. The pores are formed by the non-swelling agent extracting the solvent or swelling agent from the swollen surface of the film. The pores have a diameter of from 0À1 to 100 microns, a depth greater than 0À1 micron and there are 10<SP>2</SP> to 10<SP>8</SP> per cm<SP>2</SP> of surface.
