Abstract

1340931 Filtering and separating D K BEAVON 14 April 1971 9423/71 Heading B1D An oil-water mixture containing also oily particulate solids is treated by (i) passing through a granular filter medium to remove the particulate solids, the filtrate being water or a mixture of water and oil, (ii) periodically solvating oil from the granular filter media by passing an oil stripping media through the bed in the same direction as the oil-water mixture without affecting the integrity of the filter medium; and (iii) backwashing the filter to remove the now oil-free solids. The oil-water 'filtrate obtained in (i) may then be separated by gravity settling. The granular filter media is suitably sand of particle size 0.1 to 5 mm. diameter or a mixture of sand and coal giving rise to fine and coarse layers, other specified materials are finely divided carbon, glass beads and sintered metal. The oil may be solvated off the solids by steam or an organic solvent. The backwashing is carried out using water and may be accompanied by aeration to agitate the filter bed material.
