1340652 Sewing machines DURKOPPWERKE GmbH 12 May 1972 [21 June 1971] 22413/72 Heading D1G A sewing apparatus (Fig. 3) moves a workpiece through a twin needle sewing machine using a clamp 9, cuts a slit for a pocket using a knife 4 while sewing on reinforcing material b, then cuts two further angled slits i2 h2 at each end of the first slit using cutters 32, 33. The cutters have adjustable knives and the sewing machine has two needle bars which start and stop independently to ensure that the ends of the seams e2, f2 lie on parallel lines X, Y when making slanted pockets. The workpiece e.g. a jacket, is placed on the table. 5, the clamp 9 is lowered on to it, and the reinforcing material is placed on the clamp 9 by bars 25 and 27, and guided by rails 24 and 23 as the clamp moves the workpiece through the machine. The clamp is attached by arms 91 to a carriage 90 which moves along the spindle 8 when the pulley 7 on the spindle is driven by the sewing machine motor. After sewing, the two cutters 32, 33 are raised to cut the end slits. Each cutter 32, 33 has two blades 34 pivoted near their upper ends at 36, on a wedge shaped pin 35. When one blade is set forward and the other back they can cut slits of different lengths and at different angles to the main slit d2. The bottom end of each blade fits in a slide 37 which is attached to a triangular lever 39 rotatable about a vertical axis 391. In operation a lever 52 is rotated anticlockwise about a pin 56 by one of three pneumatic pistons 61, 62, 63. A slide 53 carrying a pin 532 may now be moved sideways by a piston 50 until the pin 352 abuts one side of the V- shaped notch 531 in lever 52. A lever 59 carrying a pin 60 which fits into a slit 531 is thus rotated about a bar 57, causing a lever 411 to move a rail 41 sideways. This rail grasps each rod 40 attached to the triangular lever 39 and moves it sideways, so rotating the triangular lever and sliding the lower ends of the knives forward or back respectively.
