1340517 Ophthalmic compositions BURTON PARSONS CHEMICALS Inc 30 Nov 1970 [1 Dec 1969 8 June 1970] 33487/73 Divided out of 1340515 Addition to 1340515 Heading C3R [Also in Division A5] Novel ophthalmic compositions comprise aqueous solutions of ethylene oxide polymers having a molecular weight of at least 100,000 in an amount sufficient to provide a viscosity of up to 30,000 cps., which also contain an ophthalmic medicament but no cellulosic derivatives. Additional ingredients are 100 to 5000 weight per cent (based on the ethylene oxide polymer) of a polyalkylene glycol and also fluorescent dyes, non-ionic surfactants, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (excluded as an ophthalmic medicament but which acts as a detoxicant, anti-agglomerant, demulcent lubricant and preventive for involuntary eyelid contraction), and buffers such as boric acid/sodium borate and monosodium/ disodium phosphate. Preferred ethylene oxide polymers have molecular weights in the range 3,000,000 to 5,000,000, and preferred optional polyalkylene glycol ingredients have molecular weights of from 400 to 6000. Ophthalmic medicaments include cortisones, neomycin sulphate, bacitracin, penicillin, sulpha drugs (e.g. sulphamerazine, sodium sulphacetamide, sulphadiazine or succinylsulphathiazole), scopolamine hydrobromide, epinephrine bitartrate, derivatives of phenylephrine, prostigmin bromide, salts of pilocarpine, idoxuridine, antipyrine, naphthazoline hydrochloride, antazoline phosphate, as well as biocides such as sodium ethylmercurithiosalicylate and di-, tri- or tetrasodium ethylenediamine tetraacetates.
