Abstract

1340505 Treating waste liquors LANCY LABORATORIES Inc 21 Dec 1970 [3 Feb 1970] 44942/70 Heading C1C In a process for modifying an aluminium workpiece comprising treating the workpiece with alkaline treatment solution and/or acid treatment solution and washing the workpiece after the or each treatment to produce used washing solution(s) containing alkaline or acid drag-out, the used washing solution(s) is (are) reconditioned by precipitating aluminium hydroxide therefrom. The used washing solutions may be mixed prior to or during reconditioning. The precipitate may be removed periodically or continuously. The reconditioned washing solutions containing aluminium hydroxide may be heated to aid settling of the aluminium hydroxide. In one embodiment the washing solution containing alkaline drag-out is reduced to a pH of 6 or less by mineral acid and mixed with washing solution containing acid drag-out, and alkaline earth metal hydroxide is added thereto to increase the pH to at least 4À7 and to precipitate aluminium hydroxide. In another embodiment the washing solution containing alkaline drag-out is mixed with washing solution containing acid drag-out, additional acid, if necessary, is added to reduce the pH to 6 or less, and alkali is added to precipitate aluminium hydroxide. In the Figure the workpiece 9 is etched in a caustic solution, washed, rinsed, anodized in sulphuric acid, washed and rinsed. The alkaline solution from wash zone 11 is treated in zone 13 with sulphuric acid to reduce its pH to 6 or less and mixed with acidic solution from wash zone 27 and calcium hydroxide in zone 18. The resultant mixture containing precipitated aluminium hydroxide has a pH of at least 4À7. The mixture is heated by steam coil 33a. Precipitate is settled out in zone 34 and reconditioned liquid is returned to wash zones 11 and 27.
