Abstract

1340038 Splicing and identifying film EASTMAN KODAK CO 3 Sept 1970 [3 Sept 1969] 42244/70 Heading G2C In an apparatus for splicing the ends of film strips together, an indicia-bearing member is applied to the new film end being spliced, and also to the film-identifying means (e.g. the customer identification envelope in which the exposed film has been supplied). Fig.1 shows a general view of the apparatus, which comprises a splicing table 14 having a film alignment track 16, a splice tape applier assembly 18, a tray 20 which carries the customer identification envelope, and a device 12 for breaking open a film cartridge. An operator sits before the table, removes the cartridge from the customer's envelope, places the latter on the tray and pushes it forward over track 16. Assembly 18 is actuated to apply an identification numberbearing tape to the envelope, which is then retracted. The cartridge is broken open in device 12, and the leading end of the film pulled forward and inserted into the end of track 16 until it is sensed and held in the correct position. Assembly 18 is actuated again to splice the leading end of the film with the trailing end of the preceding film strip, the splice being marked with the same number as the customer evelope. The film is then wound on to a take-up spindle 38, and its trailing end cut off from the backing paper and spool. The positioning, spacing, and application of the splicing tape is all carried out and controlled automatically. Fig.5 shows the assembly 18 for applying the splicing tape in more detail. Two consecutive movements of the tape carry the same number Fig.6 (not shown), the first piece for applying to the customer envelope and the second for the film splice.
