Abstract

1340050 Absorbent sanitary article JOHNSON & JOHNSON 30 April 1971 [1 May 1970] 21076/70 Heading A5R An absorbent incontinence pad or baby diaper comprises a layer 2 of absorbent material and sheets 3 of tissue paper, encased between a fluid pervious sheet 4 and a waterproof sheet 5 of thermoplastics material which has a series of embossed ribs 6 on one side which define a series of tear paths and which aid removal of the sheet 5 before disposal of the article and increase the frictional resistance of the sheet; the thickness of the film through the ribs is greater than that through the tearpaths. The ribs may be on either the innermost or outmost sides of the water proof sheet 5 and may be only along the marginal portions 7 of the sheet. The longitudinal margins of sheet 5 are wrapped around the edges of the absorbent material and attached to the fluid pervious sheet 4 by adhesive 13. In another embodiment of a baby diaper Figure 5 (not shown) the longitudinal marginal portions of the fluid impervious sheet 4 are folded underneath the absorbent material and are attached by adhesive (32) to the fluid impervious sheet 7 with the marginal portions of the fluid impervious sheet 7 provided with pressure sensitive adhesion patches (33) for securing the diaper around a baby.
