Abstract

1,239,658. Electrostatic loudspeakers. BOWERS & WILKINS ELECTRONICS Ltd. 16 April, 1970 [17 April, 1969], No. 19607/69. Heading H4J. An electrostatic loudspeaker element includes two perforated spaced apart plates 11, 12 of rigid insulating material each including a conductive surface 29, 16 on the side facing away from the other plate which surface is perforated with holes of larger diameter 21 than the holes in the respective plates and a diaphragm 15 of flexible insulating material coated with electrically resistive material secured between said plates. Plates 11, 12 are made either by a printed circuit technique or from a sheet of copper coated epoxy glass laminated. The conductive areas are produced by an etching process and the holes produced by drilling and counterboring or countersinking. The finished plates are encapsulated or varnished at 23 which produces a slight flaring at each hole leading to improved acoustic properties. The diaphragm 15 consists of polyvinyl or polyvinylidene chloride 0À0004 inch thick and is coated with resistive material on both sides to give a resistivity of 1 x 10<SP>7</SP> to 5 x 10<SP>8</SP> ohms/square inch. It is secured to an outer frame and shrunk before cementing to rear spacer member 13 when the outer frame is removed. After assembly the diaphragm is gripped between spacer members 13, 14 around each loudspeaker element and is electrically connected through contact 24. The array of loudspeaker elements may be curved to improve its directional characteristics.
