Abstract

1,239,473. Making aircraft parts; forging; working at specified temperatures. NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP. 9 July, 1968, No. 32661/68. Headings B3A, B3H and B3V. An aluminium alloy workpiece having at least one web portion of prescribed thickness and adjoining rib regions of greater thickness and prescribed plan locations is made by (a) forming the workpiece, heated to hot-forging temperature preferably 780‹ to 830‹ F., to an intermediate forged configuration in a heated die, preferably at 400‹ to 600‹ F., without complete closure of the die apparatus, (b) solution heat treating the workpiece, and (c) forging the workpiece at ambient temperature in the same die apparatus to its final forged configuration. In the intermediate forged configuration the web portions have a thickness of 101À5% to 104À0%, preferably 101À75% to 102À25%, of the prescribed thickness and the rib portions are, relative to the plan centre of the workpiece, at 99À0% to 99À7% of their prescribed plan locations. The process is particularly applicable to forged aircraft parts.
