Abstract

A coding device comprises a card 1 in which are a plurality of apertures in vertically spaced rows A, B, C, D, E, both the apertures 2 and 3 and the horizontal spaces between them being preferably equal to, or integral multiples of, a a predetermined unit length. Coding is effected by placing the card on a sheet of paper, preferably squared, or the like, e.g. a wax tablet; writing a message in the apertures, one letter to each unit length thereof; removing the card; and randomly inscribing letters in the blank spaces, so as to give a seemingly unintelligible jumble of letters. Decoding is effected merely be replacing the card in the correct position. Different codes may be achieved by turning the card over or through 180 degrees, the various orientations being indicated by reference marks 4. Non-consecutive reading of the apertures is facilitated by numbering the apertures or providing arrows indicating sequence. A set of colour-coded cards having differently-positioned apertures may be used, and the cards and sheets of paper may be bound together to form a tearoff pad. The cards may be provided as a blank having weakened portions which may be punched out to form the apertures. Such a blank may form a box or carton.
