Abstract
1,238,737. Treating particles. FLUID ENERGY PROCESSING & EQUIPMENT CO. 4 Feb., 1969 [7 Feb., 1968], No. 5926/69. Heading B2A. Solid particles for treatment are fed into a mill 10 and entrained in a stream of compressed fluid directed from nozzles 22, 36 at varying angles to the feed path, the particles impinging in the stream to cause pulverization, and being then separated centrifugally into at least two streams, whereupon the lighter particles are centrifugally separated and exhausted, while the heavier particles are recycled. The mill 10 may comprise two mill portions 14, 16, with feed inlets 20, 34 and exhaust outlets 44, 46. Fluid, e.g., air, steam, &c., is introduced from a header 26, carrying the fed particles upwardly through an upstack 38. The stream is split into opposed components through classifier sections 40, 42, the larger, heavier particles being disposed towards the outer periphery of the sections 40, 42, and returned to the input stream, and the small particles are discharged through the exhaust outlets 44, 46. In an alternative embodiment, Figure 4 (not shown), only one feeding inlet (102) and one exhaust outlet (106) are provided in one mill portion (104), the opposed mill portion (108) acting as a second upstack; further, the fluid nozzles configuration may be modified to direct a greater proportion of the stream through the opposed mill portion (208), Figure 5 (not shown). Three or more mill portions may be provided, and the flow may be reversed (central downstack). Various treatment media may be injected into the streams, and heat may be supplied, e.g., for drying.
