Abstract
1,238,565. Irradiation apparatus. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 9 Oct., 1969 [23 Oct., 1968], No. 49587/69. Heading H5R. In the irradiation of objects moved past a panel of radio-active sources held in a flat frame, a mask of radiation absorbent material having openings therethrough is placed immediately in front of the panel, the openings having a cross-section which increases from the source side to the object side, whereby greater uniformity of dose throughout the depth of the object is achieved. As shown, the radio-active sources are rods 2 mounted on a frame 3 interposed between two masks 4 each of which is formed by an array of elements 6 of absorbent material, past which the packages 7 for irradiation are moved. It is shown that for points in the irradiated object at increasing distances from the source the decrease in radiation intensity is partially compensated by an increased solid angle of irradiation (Fig. 3, not shown), and that non-uniformity of radiation dose for points in the object lying in a plane parallel to the source panel, but spaced in a direction transverse to the axes of the source rods, is similarly decreased by the presence of the mask (Fig. 4, not shown). To further reduce dose non- uniformity, the source rods and the mask may be inclined at a small angle to the direction of movement of the object 7 (Fig. 5, not shown). In an alternative embodiment, in which the source is composed of an array of point sources, the mask is in the form of an absorbing member having an array of truncated pyramidal or conical apertures aligned with the point sources (Figs. 6, 7 and 8, not shown). Reference is made to the use of the apparatus for irradiating a liquid.
