1,238,053. Drying metal oxide gels- DEUTSCHE GOLD-UND SILBER-SCHEI. DEANSTALT. 1 Aug., 1968 [3 Aug., 1967], No. 36701/68. Heading C1A. [Also in Division F4] A process for drying moist metal and metalloid oxide and hydroxide gels (e.g. silica and aluminium hydroxide) comprises heating them in a pressure vessel or autoclave to a temperature above the critical temperature of the liquid phase of the gel in the presence of an inert foreign gas (e.g. nitrogen or carbon-dioxide) and depressurizing the vessel. Some of the water in the gel may be initially replaced by an organic solvent (e.g. methanol). The gas may be added to the vessel before or after heating has begun. Gas may be bled from the vessel during the heating step.
