Abstract
1,236,858. Hydrophilic polyurethane foams. NAPHTACHIMIE. 12 Aug., 1969 [13 Aug., 1968], No. 40348/69. Headings C3C and C3R. Hydrophilic polyurethane foams are prepared by reacting an organic polyisocyanate with a polyether-polyol in the presence of a surface active agent, a catalyst for the reaction and either water or an expansion agent, the ratio of the number of isocyanate functions of the organic polyisocyanate to the number of active hydrogen atoms in the initial reaction mixture being from 0À6 to 1, and the polyether polyol having an average equivalent weight of 500 to 2000 per hydroxyl group, containing 10 to 75% by weight of units derived from ethylene oxide, and being prepared by the polyaddition of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide or an initiator having at least two hydrogen atoms per molecule that are reactive with respect to the alkylene oxides. The initiator for the polyol is suitably at least trifunctional and may be glycerol, trimethylolpropane, pentaerythritol, sorbitol, sucrose, triethanolamine, ethylene diamine or diethylene triamine. Mixtures of polyether polyols may be used provided that the average ethylene oxide content is 10 to 75% by weight. Suitable catalysts are tertiary amines and/or organo-metallic compounds. In a typical example, silicone oil, stannous 2-ethylhexoate, a polyether polyol prepared by successively reacting ethylene oxide and propylene oxide on polyethylene glycol, polyoxypropylene glycerol, water and dimethylethanol are mixed and the mixture reacted with 80/20 toluene diisocyanate to form a foam.
