A plurality of supports each carrying a plurality of textile spools is transported in series successively into a treatment vat and a hot air drying vat, the steps of the preparation of the treatment liquid, the treatment, the drying and spool transporting being effected automatically by means of a conventional punchtape unit. Control of the treatment parameters e.g. temperature may also be effected automatically. The treatment liquid may be heated at a rate of at least 10‹C/min, passed through each spool in less than 1.5 sec and recycled through a circuit comprising the treatment vat and an expansion chamber once per minute. As shown, spools 1 are treated in a vat 8 by passing treatment liquid through them under the action of a pump 35, said liquid being heated by a coil 37 in the vat. The liquid is prepared in a calibrated reservoir 9 and circulated through the vat 8 and an expansion chamber 10 by a pump 11; additional liquid prepared in an auxiliary vat 12 is added to the treatment liquid in the expansion chamber from a dosage tank 13. The expansion chamber also regulates the evacuation of liquid from the vat 8 via the discharge 50. The spools are dried with compressed hot air in an autoclave vat 15. The liquid levels in the expansion chamber, calibrated reservoir and auxiliary vat are controlled by constant level float devices. The spools and their supports are transferred to and from the treatment vat and autoclave vat on a transport device 4 comprising two rolling paths 27 and a cross beam 26. The auxiliary vat 12 and dosage tank 13 may be replaced by a graduated flask 103 (Figs. 2 and 6). Two calibrated reservoirs 9, 9' (Figs. 5 and 6) may be used alternately, one providing treatment liquid while the other prepares liquid and vice versa. Similarly two auxiliary vats 12, 12' (Figs. 5 and 7) may be used alternately. A pre-treatment which may be a boiling vat may be arranged upstream from the treatment unit 5 and a post-treatment unit may be arranged between the treatment unit 5 and the drying unit 7.
