Abstract
1,235,669. Deforming helical coils; shearing. MULTILASTIC Ltd. 5 Nov., 1968 [5 Aug., 1967], No. 36047/67. Headings B3E and B3W. Apparatus for use in the manufacture of spring interiors for mattresses and operative to trim by severing and deform helical wires comprises a support, and operating member mounted on the support for rotational and axial movement between a first position in which the end portion of a helical wire 25 to be trimmed can be passed through the apparatus and a second position, the support and the operating member including cutter means for trimming the helical wire and the operating member having abutment means for engaging the end portion of a trimmed helical wire to bend it backwards towards the body of the helical wire and inwards towards the axis of the helix to form a loop in said end portion. The apparatus comprises a pair of semi-cylindrical jaws (not shown) formed with grooves on their inner faces so that when the jaws are closed the grooves define a helical path along which the helical wire can be screwed. The helical wire projects from the jaws and passes through a head 10 on one end of a shaft 11 extending through a fixed sleeve 12. The other end of the shaft has a screw-thread 13 which passes through a nut in a bracket 14 so that, on rotation, the shaft is raised or lowered. A quadrant 15 fixed to the extreme end of the shaft engages a rack 16 reciprocable by a pneumatic cylinder 18. The rack is guided by rails 20 and an adjustable stop 19 limits its stroke. When a helical wire 25 is being linked to the springs or groups of springs its end part projects and the head 10, in its first position, offers no resistance to its passage. The head carries a movable cutter 26 which co-operates with a fixed cutter 27 mounted on the sleeve 12. On rotation of the shaft the wire is trimmed and the end of the wire abuts the surface 28<SP>1</SP> of the head and an end portion also abuts a vertical surface of the cutter 26 so that the end is urged upwards by the rising surface 28<SP>1</SP> while the end portion is twisted backwards to form the loop shown in Fig. 5 as the shaft moves to the second position.
