Abstract

1,235,439. Feeding webs. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 18 June, 1969, No. 30938/69. Heading B8R. In an arrangement for controlling the tension and acceleration of strip material, e.g. insulating paper for electrical conductors, when unwinding from a reel or pad 1, the pad is supported on a stop 4 in such a manner as to not to increase the tension in the strip 15 being unwound in the direction C. and is provided with a rotatable centre 2 which moves in guides 5 to approach the stop 4 as the diameter of pad 1 decreases; brake pads 6, e.g. of tungsten carbide, engage both sides of the pad 1 at a position near its circumference, being operable by a mechanism including brake calipers 7 attached to torsion bars 8 mounted in bearing blocks 9. A braking force, derived from a closed loop control system, is transmitted to the bars 8 and hence to the pads 6 by means of a lever 14, a balancing arm 12 and torque arms 10 (Fig. 2, not shown), whereby the pad 1 is correctively braked so that the back-tension in the strip 15 is maintained constant no matter how the pad diameter varies. So that the force required to support the pad 1 on the stop 4 does not add to the strip tension, the stop 4 may be in the form of a gas bearing; alternatively the centre 2 may be connected to a counterbalancing mechanism, or it may be constrained to run down an inclined plane rather than vertically downwards.
