Apparatus to secure lids to cartons comprises a die plate 16, Fig. 1, having an aperture or recess to locate the carton, a plurality of edge folding members 28 mounted horizontally on pivoted supports 29, and means e.g. 31-34 to pivot the supports simultaneously to move members 28 from an outer position where their inner edges are outward of the periphery of the aperture to an inner position so that they engage a vertically extending edge 13 of the carton (or lid) to fold it around the lid (carton), each folding member being angled and having an extension sliding over an adjacent folding member. As shown a carton 10 having a horizontal flange 11 with a vertical edge 13 is located on die plate 16 and ejector plate 19 and pressed manually against the counterweight 26 connected by rod 20, foot 22 and peg 27. Pedal 31 is depressed, lowering column 32 and sleeve 34 against spring 36, simultaneously pivoting supports 29 and members 28 through arms 33, thereby folding carton edges 13 over the lid 12. After releasing pedal 31, the carton is ejected by counterweight 26. For a square carton, the members 28 are L-shaped (Fig. 2, not shown), each having an extension (30) to one leg thereof, sliding over the adjacent member as the move to their inner position. In an alternative arrangement, the lid 12 may be larger than the carton ledge 11 which may be pushed up through a suitable aperture, to fold the lid edge downwardly and further folding of the lid 12 around the carton effected by members 28.
