Abstract

1,234,071. Coated granules. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. 10 April, 1968 No. 17339/68. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C1] Artificially coloured inorganic granules suitable for use in bituminous roofing compositions and having resistance to discolouration by soot, dirt and other pollutants in air comprise inorganic granules having a colour coating over their surfaces, the colour coated granules having been treated over the colour coating with an organophilic hydrophobic compound which will form a firm bond with bituminous material and which becomes hydrophilic upon exposure to u.v. radiation in sunlight and oxygen in the air. The treating material may be an organo-silicon material. Suitable compounds are derivatives of silane in which at least one of the hydrogens is replaced by an easilyweathered alkyl, alkene, alkyne, group and at least one hydrogen remains or is replaced by an hydroxy or an easily hydrolysable group. Easily-weathered groups mentioned are vinyl, dichlorovinyl, allyl, olefines, acetylenic including those containing bromine, groups containing ether linkages such as alkoxy methyl, and groups in which some or all of the hydrogen atoms have been replaced with fluorine. Other suitable compounds are the reaction products of certain alkyd resins with various silicon compounds such as diphenyl silane-diol. Easily hydrolysable groups are halogen, carboxy, alkoxy, aryloxy, amino, ether-alkoxy, etheraryloxy groups. Specific compounds mentioned are vinylmethoxypolysiloxane, sodium vinyl siliconate, vinyltriethoxysilane vinyltris (2- chloroethoxy) silane, and copolymers of alkoxy silanes. Example 1, mineral granules are coated in a tumbling barrel-type mixer with a coating composition comprising 15 lbs. titanium dioxide, 50 lbs. kaolin, 62 lbs. aqueous sodium silicate, 24 lbs. water and the coating dried and fired at 950‹F and cooled in a rotary cooler by means of a water spray. A second similar coating composition is then applied, fired and the granules again cooled. An emulsion of vinyl methoxy polysiloxane in slate oil is then added to the granules in the rotary cooler; in Example 2, the colour coating composition comprised 15 lbs. red iron oxide pigment, 20 lbs. kaolin, 45 lbs. sodium silicate, 25 lbs. water, and the colour coated granules were treated with a water spray containing aqueous sodium vinyl siliconate solution; in Example (3) the coating composition comprised 8 lbs. chromium oxide, 1.5 lbs. yellow iron oxide, 2 lbs. phthalocyanine green paste, 32 lbs. sodium silicate, 7 lbs. water and the colour-coated granules sprayed with a solution of vinyl triethoxy silane in slate oil.
