Abstract

1,232,682. Securing wire into glass. W. BETHGE. 17 May, 1968 [20 May, 1967], No. 23734/68. Heading C1M. [Also in Division H5] Apparatus for applying a thread, e.g. a wire, tape, ribbon or lace to a thermo-softening material in the manufacture of thin electrical conductors, e.g. radiant heating elements or heating rings, comprises a thread paying out device 1 having means for heating a thread guide 19 having a sliding base 25 which locally softens the material and immediately thereafter presses the thread into the material, the heating means having an unheated upper section 3 mounted in a sleeve-like support 4 and a lower section carrying a cover sleeve provided with an extension 12 through which heat is transferred to the sliding base 25. The heating means comprises a cylindrical heating element 2 which transmits heat through a central pin to a wire guide 19. A spring presses the device into the direction of travel and its inclination of 80 degrees to the plane of the carrier is adjusted by means of a set screw. A distance regulator 32 controls the lifting and lowering of the mounting support of the device and the regulator is provided with a spring-loaded tracing foot 33. Wire, tape, ribbon or lace is fed to the device from a reel 44. The device is reciprocable by an electrically controllable drive (not shown) along a guide 41 (Fig. 7). An additional drive (not shown) pivots the paying out device through 180 degrees at the end of each run and a variable drive 42 moves the carrier 43 in a transverse direction to obtain a rectangular or undulating application of the thread. As the paying out device moves over the carrier 43, the wire is pressed into the locally softened surface of the material. The heat is adjusted to suit the speed of application and the properties of the thermo-softening material.
