Abstract
1,232,242. Tape rolls. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. 28 June, 1968 [30 June, 1967], No. 31162/68. Heading B8M. [Also in Division F2] A roll 18 of film material which has a stretchy flexible nature, e.g. pressure-sensitive adhesive tape 16 wound upon a hollow cylindrical core is characterized in that the core is formed of discrete arcuate segments 10, 12, 14 which are held together to form the cylinder by the radially compressive forces of the tape. The ends of the arcuate segments may be formed to intermesh or may be hingedly connected together. The core may be formed of 2 to 6 segments. The expanded core is placed on an expandible mandrel which comprises arcuate elements around a solid core, the elements having protrusions with inclined surfaces which engage notches with similarly inclined surfaces on the solid core, so that axial movement of the segments relative to the core causes the arcuate elements to ride up the inclined surfaces and thus the circumference of the mandrel increases. Movement in the opposite axial direction collapses the mandrel for removal and collapse of the tape core.
